Industrial Designer — heritage and luxury

Ornate, jewel-inspired product design, where the detail is the product and making it at volume is the difficult part.

Engagement
Project-based to start, with scope to extend.

Hybrid.

Apply for this role

Detailed, decorative forms are straightforward to draw and much harder to produce at volume without falling back on hand-finishing. That is the problem this work sits in.

It suits a designer with a feel for craft who is also interested in how an ornate form gets tooled, plated and assembled.

What you will own

  • Decorative form and detail, from motif through to geometry that can be made
  • Material, finish and plating specification
  • Working with the tool room on undercuts, texture and finish
  • Staying with the design from concept through first article

What we need

  • Three to eight years in product design, with genuinely detailed or decorative work
  • A portfolio with decorative work that was actually manufactured
  • Understanding of plating, texturing and secondary finishing
  • Patience with the constraints decoration puts on tooling

What helps

  • Jewellery, giftware, decorative lighting or heritage product categories
  • Zinc die-casting or metal finishing experience
  • Craft or making practice of your own

Being straight with you

Restraint matters more than invention here. A lot of the skill is knowing which details to take out so the ones that remain are legible.
